Las Vegas Casinos Cater to Asian High Rollers During Chinese New Year

The month- long celebration of the Chinese New Year will start on Sunday, and casino operators around the world are gearing up to bring rich Asian revelers all their gambling needs, with special parties, food, and themes.

According to Terry Lanni, the chairman of MGM Mirage, Asians are "the quintessential player" for casinos going after the high- rolling gambler. Online Golden Casino

"I can't explain (it), but there's obviously something empirically fascinating to people in the Asian culture as far as gambling," said Terry Lanni, chairman of MGM Mirage. "They're big risk-takers in their businesses ... and they do the same in gaming."

Many of the richest Asian players name baccarat as their game of choice, and it's not uncommon for Asian high- rollers to wager hundreds of thousands, or even millions, of dollars per hand.

Many of the biggest casinos in Las Vegas have multi- billion dollar outposts in Macau, which, as an independently run administrative region of China, is well- positioned to capture the business of high- rolling Chinese players.

"Macau is like a farm for us. We bring in a lot of new players, unknown players. We get to know them and then try to bring them over to Las Vegas," said Larry Chiu, a Hong Kong native who serves as Las Vegas- based The Venetian's executive vice president of international marketing.

In an effort to "farm" new players from China, the Las Vegas Sands Chairman Sheldon Adelson's personal Boeing 767 will fly to Hong Kong this week to pick up around 50 Asian players and bring them to Las Vegas, where a VIP party will be held for them on Saturday evening at The Venetian. About half of these Asian high- rollers were recruited at casinos in Macau.

"They'll feel like Sands (Macau) is taking care of them, The Venetian is taking care of them," Chiu said. "Sister properties."

Chiu, who has worked for The Venetian since it opened in 1999, said that marketing efforts directed at Asian players have been extremely successful so far.

"In the last four years, I think we've grown our Asian market by 100 percent," Chiu said. "The numbers speak for themselves.

"There are more people coming over, more high-end players. ... We're talking about $1 million players, $2 million, $3 million players."

In addition to ferrying Asian high- rollers back and forth in top executives' private jets, the casinos are taking other steps to cater to Asian tastes, with some casinos taking that goal quite literally. "We know our high-end Asian customers prefer two types of food: authentic Asian cuisine and haute French cuisine," said Caesars Palace President Gary Selesner, referring to his choice of a new Chef, Chef Savoy, for the Caesars Palace restaurant. "Chef Savoy gives us a unique new tool in which to draw these particular guests."
